Fix iPhone X Won’t Swipe Up Problem

Some iPhone X users have complained that their device won’t swipe up. It is quite annoying when this occurs, as your display is locked. Then, you can not do anything using your iPhone X. Making or receiving calls and messages, apps, camera, etc, are locked if the swipe up does not work.

Minor software problems or bugs are the most common cause of this error. Many a time, such swipe up issues are caused by outdated iOS. You need to update the iOS with the latest version to fix such issues. The process to update the iOS is described below.

Update the iOS

If the display swipe up issue is there, first you need to fix that issue by any of the methods given under the sub-heading “How to Fix iPhone X Won’t Swipe Up Problem”. Then update the iOS as explained below.

  • Go to the settings app.
  • Select “General”.
  • Select “Software Update”.

1. Swipe up from the White Horizontal Bar at the Very Bottom of iPhone X’s Screen

The swipe up should be done properly to avoid errors. This is explained below.

I. If Face ID Recognition Works

  • Your iPhone X will show the message “swipe up to open“.
  • Swipe up from the white horizontal bar at the very bottom of the display screen.
  • Check if the Swipe up issue is resolved or not.

II. If Face ID Recognition does not Work

  • Your iPhone X will display a message “swipe up to unlock“. On the top portion of the display screen, the lock symbol will be displayed.
  • Move to another location which is brightly lit, so that the iPhone X device can recognize your face.
  • If the device recognizes your face now and then swipe up issue is still not fixed, try any of the fixes given in this article.
  • If the face ID is still not recognized, take the iPhone X to an Apple store or Apple authorized service center. They will fix the issue and check if the issue is fixed. The services may be chargeable.

2. Force Restart

Force Restarting the iPhone X can fix issues with swipe up. This is to be done as follows.

  1. Press and quickly release the volume up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume down button
  3. Then, press and hold down the side button on your iPhone X until the Apple logo appears. This can take 10-15 seconds.
  4. Check if the iPhone X Swipe up issue is resolved or not.

Note: Instead of step 1 and step 2, you can alternatively press the Home and On/Off buttons simultaneously.

3. Charge the Device

Sometimes, by charging the iPhone X device, swipe up issue gets resolved on its own. This is explained below.

  • Connect the iPhone X to the charger unit.
  • Plugin the charger unit to the power socket and switch it on.
  • Wait for 60 minutes or so. If you do not see the charging icon displayed on the screen within this period, check and ensure that the USB cable, jack, power cable, etc, are connected firmly.
  • Check if the swipe up issue is resolved or not.

4. Move to a Different Area

Sudden temperature drop can cause the swipe up issues. To fix this issue, do the following.

  • Move to a different room or area.
  • Check if the swipe up issue is resolved or not.

5. Device Firmware Update

Device Firmware Update (DFU) can fix swipe up issues. The Device Firmware Update process is explained below.

  1. Connect the iPhone X to a computer or laptop that has got the latest version of the iTunes app installed.
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. You need to press and immediately release the Volume Up button, followed by pressing and immediately releasing the Volume Down button.
  4. Now, press and hold the side button, until the recovery-mode screen is displayed to you.
  5. Locate and select your device name.
  6. A menu with 3 options, “Cancel”, “Restore” or “Update”, will be displayed to you. Select “Update” from this menu. Your computer will reinstall the device software within the next 15 minutes or so.
  7. Check if the iPhone X swipe up issue is fixed or not.

6. Restore Device Firmware

Restoring the Device Firmware to the factory settings is the last resort if all the previous methods to fix the swipe up issue has failed.

Note: This causes all data on your mobile to be lost. If you have any backup of the data, you may be able to restore data to some extent.

  1. Connect the iPhone X to a laptop or computer with the Apple iTunes app installed.
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Then, press and immediately release the Volume Up button. Then, press and immediately release the Volume Down button.
  4. Now, press and hold the side button until the recovery-mode screen is displayed.
  5. Locate and select the iPhone X in iTunes.
  6. A menu with the following three options, “Cancel”, “Restore” or “Update”, will be displayed. Select the “Restore” menu option.
  7. Your computer will reset all of the device software to the factory settings, within the next 15 minutes or so.
  8. Check if the iPhone X swipe up issue is fixed or not.

Conclusion: Some iPhone X users have complaints that swipe up is not working. It is quite annoying when this happens. Minor software glitches are the main cause of this issue.

This issue can be fixed easily by different methods. The simplest solution is to Swipe up from the white horizontal bar at the very bottom of the device. Force restarting (or hard resetting) is another method.

On devices with the Face ID recognition system, you need to move to another area that is well lit to resolve the Face ID issues.
