How to Delete pagefile.sys in Windows 8 Easily?

Have you heard about virtual memory in your computer? Have you ever increased or decreased it through system settings? Virtual memory is allocated by default by computer whose memory depends upon your RAM. Virtual memory is very important for your computer as it speeds up PC in case RAM is too busy. Page File or pagefile.sys is the virtual memory file stored on your hard drive. Pagefile.sys along with swapfile.sys stays in your Windows installation drive. It’s automatically created by your system to improve the performance of Windows 8/8.1 in case it slows down.

Page File or pagefile.sys in Windows works as secondary memory on computer. pagefile.sys contains heavy amount of data at times which may start from 1 GB to several GB’s depending upon your allocation. People want to delete swapfile.sys and pagefile.sys to save some space on their hard disk. Many users keep complaining about low space on their C drive. It bleeds RED whenever they open my computer on their laptop/PC. Deleting pagefile.sys given their few GB’s of space.

Note: Deleting pagefile.sys is not recommended. In fact, you should not delete any system files. Instead of deleting you can clear pagefile.sys file upon every shutdown. We have given steps to do it.

Steps to Delete pagefile.sys in Windows 8:

1. Open Computer Properties in Windows 8/8.1.

2. Click on “Advanced System Settings” on left hand panel.

3. Choose “Performance Settings” option under “Advanced Tab” as shown above.

4. Select the “Advanced Tab” in Performance Options.

5. You will see “Change button“. Click on it.

6. Uncheck “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” in the window that opened.

7. Select “No Paging File” at the bottom. Click on SET and press OK.

8. Reboot your system to apply these settings.

How to Clear PageFile.sys in Windows Group Policy?

We don’t recommend deleting pagefile.sys file from Windows 8 as it is very important for system to keep functioning properly. Virtual memory acts as secondary memory which speed up your laptop even with low RAM. Deletion of page file isn’t recommended but you can clear the data inside it on every shutdown. It can be done through Windows group policy in Windows 8.

Steps to clear pagefile.sys via Windows Group Policy:

  1. Open RUN. (Windows key + R).
  2. Type “GPEDIT.MSC” and hit enter on keyboard.
  3. Go to path “Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options” from left hand side.
  4. On the right hand side look for “Shutdown: Clear virtual memory page file policy”.
  5. Double click on it and it will open another Window.
  6. Select “Enabled” radio option in next window that opened.
  7. Press OK to save changes.
  8. Reboot computer for changes to take effect.
  9. To change settings, open same path and select “Disabled”, click Ok, save changes and reboot computer.

How to Clear Pagefile.sys via Windows Registry in Windows 8?

You can easily clear pagefile.sys file via Windows 8 registry. It will clear pagefile.sys on every shutdown of Windows 8. It will save space on your computer by clearing the pagefile.sys. It’s data will be deleted however file will still be present. It won’t get removed.

Steps to clear pagefile.sys from Windows Registry in Windows 8

  1. Open RUN. (Windows key + R).
  2. Type “REGEDIT.EXE” and hit enter on keyboard.
  3. Visit path : “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management” from left hand side.
  4. Check for file “ClearPageFileAtShutdown” on right panel.
  5. If it’s there, double click and change value to 1.
  6. If it’s not there then right click on memory management and select New >> DWORD (32 bit value) and name it as ClearPageFileAtShutdown.
  7. Set the value of this file to 1.
  8. Press OK to save changes.
  9. Reboot computer for changes to take effect.
